Snopes' take on that, at least in what they'd written so far, is that it wouldn't be the first time a news team bought a hoax.

i so should have looked there first..we can all so easily fall victim to the idea that if it's on tv- it's real.. Ack!

Well, I think the jury's still out. Snopes suspects a hoax, but the major news orgs are still thinking it's real. I don't think the Snopes article was up when you first posted about it, though. It's a pretty recent one.
