Kangaroos, hopping across Europe.

how myths of satyrs are actually support for the Noah's Ark story (and kangaroos, to boot) So very giggle-worthy. (linked from [livejournal.com profile] ajhalluk)

And the particularly amusing paragraph ajhalluk referenced:

"However, evidence of the kangaroo's migration through Europe can be found in the reports of satyrs. Satyrs, which many believe to have been strictly demonic in origin due to the goat like features attributed to them by Pagans, were actually a conflation of demons and kangaroos by the ignorant Pagan natives of Greece. It is easy to see that the well-known features of satyrs -- two-legged, upright stance with elongated metatarsi; hirsuteness; a tail; long, pointed, horn-like ears; long or bearded face -- closely coincide with the general kangaroo body form. The more goat-like attributes, such as cloven feet, were no doubt due to confusion in the wine-addled minds of Dionysian cultists between kangaroos and the demons that the cultists consorted with, which manifested in goatish forms"

That's a great read. You realize that's a joke site, right? It's a well done site, the first couple of times I saw it, I thought they believed it.

Um, based on your saying that I have spent the last 45 minutes looking for any clear sign that it's a joke site. So far the only thing that makes me suspicious is that all of the arguments are so meticulously reasoned (given the base assumptions), which is often patchy on internet philosophy sites of all stripes.

Generally if you go far enough down into spoof sites you hit something that would be utterly offensive to the people being parodied and I haven't found it yet. The kid's section, in particular, seems very straight-faced to me. Can you give me a pointer to something specific?

yeah

It seems legit to me too. Well that might not be the best choice of words but it seems not in jest.

Maybe there was confusion because they do link to landover baptist which is a parody site. But it is a link that encourages getting them shut down.

Look up Objective Ministries on the Web outside of its own site. And the alleged belief about the nails in Jesus' hands is non-existent in Christian theory outside of that website.

I'd forgotten, but yes, now that you mention it, I remember this whole debate coming up previously about them, and after a good deal of research by everyone involved, it being determined to definitely be satire.

If I pretend that's satire, it's brilliant. If I believe it's genuine, it's tragic.

What what WHAT??? AAAAAAAAAA! My brain hurts!

It's like reading that book that explains that the dinosaurs became extinct because of the Great Flood all over again.
