Road Kill: It's Fresh, It's Organic, It's Free -- Honestly, perfectly sensible. I'd have to get over some of my cultural food limitations, and it'd be important to know how fresh the animal was, and what communicable diseases could be an issue, but I would have to get over the "ick factor" for one of my other favorite protein production ideas too -- developing an american taste for bugs and grubs. I like lobster, and they're basically giant sea bugs. I bet I'd dig roasted insects of various sorts, too. (and in response to someone's comment about cannibalism in the original post: If I die, and you're starving, eat me with my blessings. Please save and tan the tats; my friends have plans for them.)

On the importance of midwives

I mean, there is a lot of (IMHO) woman hating in the following group of words. The topic, porn, the statement: “Do I want to look at some plastic-surgery enhanced woman who doesn’t even look human being porked”, the subject, how women who perform in porn (or are in the sex industry at large) suffer from Stockholm Syndrome.

Now see, that just chaps my ass in all the wrong ways. I mean, a huge thing that you see coming from anti porn feminists is that they hate the porn because it dehumanizes and degrades the women in it. But see, I am not sure how someone saying those very women do not even look like human beings is anything but dehumanizing and degrading?
-- Amen.

Zombiechocolate has important stuff to say about that state of the economy in Ohio, and what that's meaning to people on a day-to-day basis. I'm so incredibly lucky to be in one of the safest job positions I possibly could be. My housemates and friends are being hit right and left. I'm still being hit directly by the public service cuts, especially RTA. A big factor in our move location was not only "is this on a bus line?" but "is this on a bus line we can be sure won't be cut?"

Setting aside all of the other meta-discussions on race and class that surround this issue, the thing about all of this that creeps me out the most is that so many people are willing to defend this officer who, assuming the most charitable possible interpretation, arrested a guy because he didn't like his attitude. That is what [Mike Barnicle] is defending. That is what the execrable Mika Brzenski is defending. That is what I have read numerous commenters on a multitude of sites from the entire political spectrum defend. -- Yes. This.

Not at all surprising, sadly, but utterly enraging: A woman in New Jersey refused a c-section during labor. She gave birth vaginally, and the child was healthy. But the baby was taken away and placed in a foster home, because the woman allegedly “abused and neglected her child” by refusing the c-section. She was also accused of behaving “erratically” — to which I can only point out that she was in labor. I hear that hurts a lot.

Sex Work and Marriage

Well, out of time. Still have about 160 emails (which includes LJ notifications I've set) to get through. Oy.

I don't really know how close we are to being all done and complete and finished with closing on the house. All day has been about faxing one last bit of paperwork after another. I think we're pretty much done, and it is happening now, but I'm rather confused at this point. And exhausted. And headachey. So glad I'm going home now.

Incidentally, I've been keeping a sleep diary in prep for my sleep study next month. I know I sleep weirdly, but wow. Five days so far, and no single sleep period longer than 3-4 hours.
I need a specific icon for these posts. I should ponder that.

Anyway, trying to wade through my inbox, and I've got entirely too much tagged as "to read/post", so here it comes:

What's so funny about rape? Damned good question. And a lot of good points about pretending to be all edgy when there's nothing the least bit subversive about supporting the dominant paradigm with your humor. That specifically speaks to my distaste for shock jocks, especially. It's possible to be thoroughly lewd, crude, and shocking, and amuse the hell out of me by actually using that humor to look at social issues from a new perspective. It's also possible, and a lot more common, to simply use those tactics to reinforce disgusting and damaging stereotypes.

As many as 87% of employer-based insurance programs cover abortion. I mention this because, although it's such a political hot-potato that I don't think there's any chance any governmental plan will be allowed to cover it (much like the Hyde Amendment screws women on Medicaid), people need to understand it's not an unusual thing to have covered, and this will have a big impact on women who end up on any governmental plan that's likely to come into existence. If you watched Sarah Palin’s resignation speech, you know one thing: her high-priced speechwriters moved back to the Beltway long ago. Here is the colorful result.

Nudism: Stick It to Your Puritan Forebears By Stripping Down
I'm pretty exhausted; it was a crazy, stressful weekend all 'round, and I ended up with a migraine all day yesterday. At least we can use our water again (although Bec and Jer still have a massive hole in their ceiling from the removal of the swiss-cheesed pipe that had to be replaced). I've been all sorts of productive, though, and have even finally gotten around to getting my license again (it expired more than five years ago). It's only a temporary permit until I actually take the driving test this Friday, but hey, it's progress! And I've got the paperwork for my passport all sorted out, and am just waiting to have the cash available to get that, too. So that's two semi-long-term plans finally happening. And I have a list of everything else, which is always calming for me. Can't wait for the 27th, our new (and hopefully final) close date. As we get closer to the actual date, I keep getting more and more nervous that something's going to go catastrophically wrong in some way, and it's all going to fall apart. And I'm nervous about finances, and affording the immediate stuff we need, and all that. Oy. It'll all get caught up relatively soon, but at the moment I'm a lot more broke than I'd like. I'm patient-instructing this week, though, which'll be nice. And this coming weekend is looking relatively calm, I think.

How to Meet and Woo a Nerdy Girl

This is... *ahem* disturbingly accurate. For amusement's sake, I'm going to repost, and bold the bits that are accurate to me. And add italics with comments to expand... Because that's how I roll.

Tip #1: Know where to look.

The number one thing to know about nerdy girls -- they're probably not going to be doing body shots at the local sports bar on a Friday night. If they're out partying, it's over a micro-brewed pale ale in the quiet corner of their local hole-in-the-wall watering hole. Other good places to spot nerdy women: libraries, bookstores, used bookstores, any other place with books you can think of, comic book stores, knitting stores, craft stores, sitting in the park...reading a book, the local cat fanciers convention, at a midnight showing of "Alien" or in their living rooms, watching "Firefly" again.

Tip #2: It helps to look like this guy: (David Tennant)

On the other hand, it helps to look like this guy too: (John Hodgman)

You're pretty much good either way.

Tip #3: Read lots of books.

Here’s the brutal truth: the nerd girl of your dreams is a brainiac. She’s going to know a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff. You’re going to need to study up -- none of that sitting at the coffee shop with an unread copy of “The Waste Land” in your hand, trying to impress the shallow ladies. Your nerd girl will check to make sure that the spine on the book is cracked and cracked good. She likely also will ask you to compare “The Waste Land” to “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” If you have to resort to Cliff's Notes, do it surreptitiously. It’s like getting a butt implant – the nerd girls will know you’re faking it.
(book titles may vary)

Tip #4: Don’t slack off on your video game skills.

One of the prime perks of dating a nerdy woman is that she will not yell at you for playing video games rather than, say, going shoe shopping with her. In fact, she likely will sit down next to you and pick up a controller. Here’s the thing though: she’s probably good at whatever game you’re playing so you better be good at it too. Whether it’s Mario Kart or Tiger Woods Golf or the bloody carnage of Grand Theft Auto, she will show no mercy. Practice, practice, practice! board and trivia games welcome, though

Tip #5: Listen to NPR.

Nerd girls like to stay up to date on their current events…and they like to do it with the dulcet, sometimes somnolent tones of NPR broadcasters. Beware, though, of the onset of NPR depression which stems from listening to so much news and sad stories about flooding in Nova Scotia or the inequities facing migrant workers that you become convinced the world is doomed and there’s no use leaving your house in the morning. This will put a damper on your dating. However, this prevalent disease also will give you an out if you've had to slack off on your NPR duties – just say, “I had to take an NPR break. Sometimes it makes me sad.” This serves two purposes: it gets you off the hook AND it makes you look sensitive. Bonus!

Tip #6: Be interesting.

Whereas a lot of ladies want you to be rich, nerdy women just want you to be interesting. Do you have a comic book collection that spans decades and rests in a vault somewhere untouched by human hands? That’s kinda cool. Are you learning how to do animation so you can one day post the adventures of a hobo cat online? That’s kinda cool too. Maybe you build houses for the poor on weekends or spend an afternoon teaching creative writing to high school kids? Awesome and more awesome. It doesn't matter what you do, just do it well.

Tip #7: Know your pop culture references.

Know the complete works of the Nerd Holy Trinity: Joss Whedon, J.J. Abrams and Peter Jackson. Know that Nathan Fillion will always be on your girl’s “freebie” list. When she goes to church and thanks God that Robert Downey Jr. survived the 1980s so he could play Iron Man, say “Amen” right alongside her. And for the love of all that is sacred and holy, do not EVER get “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” confused: one has Wookiees, one has Shatner, it’s not that hard.

Tip #8: Compliment her by saying, “You remind me so much of Liz Lemon.”

This is truly the highest form of flattery for just about any nerdy woman. Liz Lemon is our patron saint. Her inability to wear high heels, keep food off her face or refrain from making penis jokes while holding a tower made of Legos in her hands makes us reflect fondly on our own quirks. We love her…and you should too. Eh. I like her, but don't identify with her. I'd be moderately complimented, though

Tip #9: Embrace her collectibles.

That is not a euphemism for something pervy. It’s just a fact. When you walk into her apartment for the first time and notice a glass cabinet filled with a miniature TARDIS, a sombrero-wearing Giles, a 17-inch Han Solo and a two-foot long replica of the Enterprise NCC-1701-D, do not say, “What the hell is all this stuff?” Instead say, “What the hell? Why don’t you have MORE of this stuff? And may I mail order something for you?” Although I have some collectibles, I don't have enough to be worthy of comment, I don't think. Better embrace the bookshelves and critters, though

Tip #10: Be willing to go to conventions.

It’s just a thing we do. Relax and embrace it…and know that nine times out of ten, you’ll catch a glimpse of some nubile young woman dressed as a Princess Leia slave girl. It’s what the universe does to reward patience of our significant others.

Tip #11: Know what to do in a zombie attack.

We've been practicing for this one for a long time. We don't want to have to leave you behind.

And from the comments, worthy of mention:

Know that she'll answer an email sooner than she'll pick up a voicemail.

Oh, good maude, yes.

skip the giving of flowers. We much prefer books (even a B&N gift card, I'm not picky), DVDS and other inanimate objects that will not die in 3-5 days. Chocolates, however, will always be welcome.

Indeed.

I would also add that correct grammar and punctuation is your friend. Semi-coherent e-mails are a nerd girl turn off.

Preach it, sister!

Awake.

Peg and I were invited guests at a historic event: June 29, 2009 marked the first time a United States President ever hosted a reception for LGBT people at the White House. I was there representing BiNet USA and the Bisexual Resource Center (BRC).

From NARAL, message your congresscritters -- this is important!

Senators on the Finance Committee are finalizing the health-care reform bill right now. Anti-choice senators are pressuring them to bar insurance plans from covering reproductive-health services.

From NARAL, some credit where credit is definitely due:

FAME: MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show"

Let's give credit where credit is due. Rachel Maddow at MSNBC continues to devote significant time to thoughtful coverage of Dr. Tiller's murder and how it is part of a much broader pattern of violence, intimidation, and legislative gamesmanship designed to block women’s access to safe, legal abortion.

For many Americans, particularly those too young to remember the violence of the 1990s, Maddow's program has provided a tremendous public service, and should serve as a guide for other news programs.

Our gratitude to Ms. Maddow and her team.

Home today

Backache from hell woke me up around 2am. Finally got back to sleep at 5am. Ended up calling in.

However, at least I've gotten a bit of productive stuff done (nothing I couldn't have done from the office, unfortunately). Bought plane tickets to Birmingham for me and Grafton. Scheduled one-way truck rental from B'ham to Cleveland. Sent in my payment to the BMV for reinstatement, called Cleveland Heights for the release letter I need from them (could've done any of this five years ago, just haven't had a good reason). Once the payment processes and I have the letter in hand, I can schedule my driver's test. Not too worried about it. Need to talk to friends, see who I can get to let me use their car, though.

Also need to get the home owners insurance taken care of today (edit: arranged for quotes, want to call Julia with some questions). Otherwise everything's essentially all set for the house purchase; I've sent in my signed mortgage, we've got a signed final contract, etc. Still haven't figured out what flooring option we're going with in the front house, and I'm stressing a bit about that, and potential expense. Otherwise, all is going swimmingly.

Need to set up a ride to my doctor's appt next week. Must remember to print copies of the FMLA paperwork; it's due for a new set. Also, need to figure out when Jen's going to be in town this weekend. And I'm meeting with Casey and Bill Friday afternoon. May have dates Weds and Thurs evening, not sure yet. As long as I'm online, I should look into getting a replacement copy of my birth certificate, so I can get my passport. (instructions here: http://www.vdh.state.va.us/vital_records/mail_it.htm)

Also need to get down to Target and pick up my scrips.

As long as I'm on, might as well post some more links that've been accumulating in my "to post" folder...
