1. how would you deal with a young person who is bisexual and is being told its a phase?

Primarily, I'd try to communicate my belief, and the increasing data, that sexuality is a complex, fluid, hard-to-pin-down thing, and that static identity labels have the ability to be as constrictive as they do freeing and self-affirming. Then I'd point out that there's no more or less reason to believe bisexuality will be a phase for them than heterosexuality or homosexuality (people shift in all directions remarkably evenly, actually), and even if any of those were a phase, that doesn't invalidate the importance of such times and experiences. I'd also talk about how identity isn't determined solely by who one is sleeping with, or not sleeping with, at one particular moment. That'd probably lead to a conversation about what issues matter most, regardless of partner choice -- mutual respect, safety, etc -- and I'd acknowledge the presence of biphobia and the issue of bi-invisibility, and talk a bit about how to handle it in our society, and where to find bi/questioning/queer-supportive resources.

2. If you found out one of the people getting an abortion was/is a pro life protester would you out them or how would you deal?

No, I definitely wouldn't. It's not actually a particularly rare occurrence. It frustrates and angers me, but I also think that demonstrating our morals and standards is more important than vengeance, both in the message it sends to that woman, and the message it sends to other patients. I can hope that her experience will change her views, either then or gradually over time, but I can't assume that'll happen. However, it's not like I'm totally high-minded, either. I'm quite sure I wouldn't be able to resist snarking with other people where it wouldn't be a privacy violation (other escorts or employees, for example).

3. What resources and research would you suggest for someone who was interested in creating porn films?

Hmmmm.... Well, keep in mind that I don't follow internet-available porn much at all, so I know nothing about new developments there. I think I'd suggest checking out a wide range of porn (easiest either online, or through a porn rental service; I use sugardvd.com myself, and am reasonably content with it, although I still have to buy my own on too much of the niche stuff they don't have), particularly noting which production companies it's coming from, to start to get a sense of how many ways the topic can be tackled, in everything from actor choice to production values. I'd especially suggest checking out a good deal of the successful indie and queer stuff, but I also think it's valuable to see where the mainstream has attempted to get creative, and in which ways they've succeeded and failed (I think Tristan Taormino's attempts at creating big budget mainstream pieces with her own spin are interesting, for example, and say a lot about where the weaknesses and strengths in that approach turn out to be). I have no idea what AVN (Adult Video News) is like these days -- last time I saw an issue had to be 15 years ago, but it's one place to look and see how the more mainstream stuff is being handled, at least. However, since I doubt you're talking about going to work for Vivid or something, focusing on the smaller productions is likely to be more useful. Looking through Good Vibes and Blowfish's websites can be handy for seeing what kind of creative stuff is being done; they carry and accurately review more of the cool stuff than most places. Blowfish has a Blowfish Presents series, Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano do some fun stuff, Audacia Ray's fun and feminist... There's a lot out there. If you're seriously interested, we should talk at more length some time, by IM or email. I'm not the most knowledgeable, but I'm familiar with enough to point you toward some starting points, at least, if I can understand more what you're thinking about doing.

Since the original question post was on my sexuality filter, I'm screening comments here, too, in case anyone else wanted to ask something (personal, theoretical, TMI, whatever). I'm not sure how many more I'll get through by the end of the day, but I'm having fun so far.
1. If you moved away from Ohio, where would you like to go?

People are the single biggest pull for me. I like Ohio because it's pretty central to all sorts of people I care about, but I think these days I'd be tempted to move a bit further toward the east coast; there are people I miss a great deal living in NY, PA, and MD. Purely on a "the area appeals to me" level, though, I'd have to go with the northwest, probably Seattle or Portland (it doesn't hurt that there are a bunch of excellent people out that way, too, but it does mean moving radically further away from all my people on this side of the country).

2. What was your favorite year of your life, thus far?

Hooboy. That's a really hard one, because most of the ones that were really great were also really awful and full of drama and pain, too. I'd say for the best balance of stability, fun, and discovery, probably my junior year of college. No real life responsibility yet, a great social network, lots of interesting things to do, roadtrips to make, classes to take. You still couldn't pay me to be myself at 19 again, though, regardless of how good the year was. Life was good, but I was messy.

3. How do you feel about sports, in general?

Aside from Ninja Warrior?

I rarely even know what major sports season it is. Frankly, I'm not sure now. I guess it's baseball, given the Bonds drama. People mention teams, even in my home city, and I have to stop and think which sport they play (this is especially ridiculous given that I can actually see the fireworks from Jacobs field from my street). I get into aspects of the Olympics some, and once in a while some very random "competitive chainsaw balancing" or the like while channelflipping, but that's about it.

4. Where is the farthest from home that you've been?

Must be San Diego, geographically speaking. I've been across and over the majority of the continental US (excepting Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Maine, New Hampshire, and Louisiana), but aside from a few brief hops into the tourist traps on the Mexican border, and some time in Montreal, Toronto, and Windsor, that's it. I haven't traveled much internationally for two reasons. The single biggest is finances; they're always a mess, I suck at saving, and traveling out of the country costs more than traveling within the country to see the people I love and miss (ok, that's a combo of finances and priorities, I guess). Secondly, I have some weird and mixed feelings about being a tourist. I've always wanted to see the world from a more useful perspective, by doing something like working with Doctors Without Borders or something. Sometimes I feel hopelessly provincial for being 32 and not having been off the continent. Other times I think about how much I've seen of this continent, and how amazing that is, both in the context of how much traveling most of the planet gets to do today, and especially compared to how much I would've gotten to see of the world 50 or 100 years ago, and I'm just awed.

5. Monkeys: yay or nay?

Yay, even though they're generally nasty-tempered and bitey. I don't romanticize 'em, but I do dig 'em. Then again, I dig pretty much any critter that isn't actively parasitic, and I'm kind of impressed even by a few of those.

If anyone would like me to ask them questions, I'll do the first five that reply.
Is there anything you'd most like to do with me the next time we see each other? If it's largely just 'hang out', is there a new movie you'd like to share with me?

Well, I'm hoping by late March it'll be nice enough out that we won't be totally cooped in the house; the Cleveland Film Festival will be on its final weekend, and that's something to consider. I'm not sure yet what other stuff will be going on in town then, though.

Which is your favourite Moomin story? Why?

Exploits of Moominpappa, hands down. It's a slightly different version from Moominpappa's Memoirs, which seems to be easier to find these days. I love the adventuring aspect, and the wonderful ship. And I'm deeply fond of the Muddler.

Underhand or overhand?

Badly, either way.

Are you, in any way, actually a widget in disguise?

More of a thingamabobber, I think.

Also, thanks to everyone who gave feedback on the long-distance maintenance question.
why are bears your thing?

It's partly physical, and partly temperamental, I think. They're generally mellow and playful and not remarkably high energy, and they like woods, water, and sleep (generally in the same kinds of climates I enjoy). They're not generally actively nasty-tempered, but it's also a bad idea to piss them off, and they're big, physically powerful and well-padded.

Which probably doesn't explain it all that well, really. But if I could picture myself being any wild animal, I'd picture myself as a bear.

It's somewhat incidental that it's also a term used within the queer community, but I like that, since I generally do tend to be attracted to many people who could be described that way.
What do you like about February?

Well, it's snowing lovely big flakes outside! This has actually been a really nice February. Interestingly snowy. Normally in Cleveland it's the season of grey slush, and is pretty universally disparaged. However, winter came so late this year that I feel like I'm just now getting to appreciate it. It's kind of nice to get to enjoy it while knowing that spring is right around the corner, too. That takes some of the nip out of the chilly days.

Also, I do better with cold that hot. I'm generally fine in really cold weather, I like outdoor temps between 30 and 70 best, and wilt very quickly above that.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would you choose and why?

If this were only about me:
I'd be interested in exploring living (as opposed to vacationing) in various parts of the world, for a variety of reasons. I'm particularly curious about Iceland and about some of the Polynesian islands. It may seem like an odd juxtaposition, but in both cases it's about a combination of curiosity about geography and culture. And since reading Jared Diamond's Collapse, I'm extra-fascinated -- both regions feature prominently in his writing, especially their ecological fragility. I'd be interested to spend more time understanding how people live differently with their land when it's so dramatically fragile.

In all practicality (figuring in pets/loved ones/etc):
The biggest factors for me about where I live have to do with being reasonably close to people I love, having a cost of living that allows me to afford a place I can have my pets, and gives me reasonable access to political/cultural activism. I'm also fond of temperate to cool climates with lots of fresh water. I'm really pretty happy in the Midwest, given all that. There are cities I enjoy more than Cleveland (Chicago is an excellent example), but the cost of living, combined with being further from most people in my life (although closer to a few) isn't enough to motivate me to move.

And although I'm not in the mood to move back to the middle of nowhere, I do miss it regularly, and wish it were someplace I could spend time more often.
Anyone still out there to entertain me for the next hour and a quarter?

Oh, hell. How about giving me something to write about? All topics fair game.

[Poll #936635]

Or maybe answering a question for me. What kinds of things do you do to maintain long-distance friendships and relationships?

Questions from [livejournal.com profile] cjdoyle:

1) How many people, as an estimate, do you think have touched your big toe on the right foot?
Hmmm... I think it must be a pretty high number. I spend a lot of time barefoot, I used to be very touchy-feeling with a pretty large community of people, and I spent close to two decades as part of a church that did mutual foot-washings on Maundy Thursday. I'd guess at least 100.

2) The Shatner DVD club introduced you to some great films. What flim would you introduce Shatner himself to?
Oh, speaking of that, apparently they went out of business! I got my last disk in January, along with a note that they were closing down. I think I'd want him to see Forbidden Zone. Somehow it feels like a fair trade for Incubus.

3) You've opened your home and heart to a number of animals. If you were forced by a new landlord (or whatever) to cull the herd down to a single species, who would win out?
Hooboy. I can't imagine giving up any of my current pets -- if a declaration like that came down, it'd be time to move. However, in the hypothetical, where it was a question of what I would limit myself to acquiring, it'd definitely be cats. I've had dogs off and on throughout my life, but I've always had cats, except for college, when I couldn't.

4) Describe your goals with regards to your tattoos.
Hmmm. I've been thinking about that some. Honestly, other things have out-prioritized finishing my arm/back tattoo for so long that I'm pretty used to it as is, although I keep meaning to get it finished. My big goal is really to do with that piece, and finally getting around to getting it completed before my artist dies of old age or something. Other than that, I don't have active plans for more at the moment, although there are some old ideas still on the backburner. I'd like to go through and do some touchups on my current work, though, especially my backpiece, since I knew going into it that the browns and reds would need touch up work more often than some colors.

5) Did you have a least favorite Smurf? Who was it? Why did you hate them so?
I was never a huge Smurfs fan in general, although the sheer number of smurf figures did fascinate me a bit as collectibles. I'd say my least favorite was Smurfette -- I was in a pretty hardcore tomboy phase at that point anyway, which certainly added to the ways in which she grated on me, but overall I just found her cloying, and I thought she used her gender in manipulative ways.

From the [livejournal.com profile] altfriday5:

1. What was the last question someone asked you (not including this one)? What was your answer?
"Just out of curiosity, what was the ticket number on that one?"
"952202"

2. What was the last question you asked? What was the answer?
"How can I help you?"
"I'm trying to find a ticket that was paged to me, but I can't remember the ticket number, and it's not showing up in my queue"

3. Do people often ask you questions? Why or why not? How many questions would you estimate you get asked in an average day?
I work on a Helpdesk, and I take between 90 and 160 calls per day. Each call involves at least one central question, and usually involved multiple identity and trouble-shooting question/answer interactions. Patient-instructing also involves answering lots of questions, and clinic escorting does as well, since people are often curious about the us, the protestors, etc.
Outside of work and volunteering, I'd say I probably get my fair share. I'm something of a reference on specific topics for my friends, and I enjoy that.

4. Do you often ask questions? Why or why not? How many questions would you estimate you ask in an average day?
Outside of work I ask a moderate number, and research for myself the answers to many more.

5. When you hear a question, do you feel compelled to answer it?
Almost always, unless there's an obvious reason it's a bad idea. I like sharing/spreading information.
I went ahead and found my MatchMe test:

I really should go look at my icons on OKCupid -- that's a kind of scary picture.

*boggle* I only got a 25% match with myself when I took it. How weird.
Answer the First: Obviously, wandered too close to the Lake shore. Tragic, really.

Answer the Second: It'd be a horrible, horrible choice to have to make, but I would choose people over books. The question does remind me of the story about the last man, and the full library, and the broken glasses, though. I don't remember the title (I'm sure someone else here does) but the whole idea horrified me (I can barely read without my glasses; have to cover one eye and hold the book about 2 1/2 inches from my other eye, so it's entirely too easy a scenario to imagine).

Answer the Third: Well, I expect he'd be quite interesting to talk to. At least, it's not an experience I could pass up. I don't know whether that's what one "should" do, but I think it's what I would do.

Answer the Fourth: The Dark Crystal and Naussica (although admittedly it was the hacked 80s american version I made my parents rent week after week). I adored both, and still do.

Answer the Fifth: I'm not so sure I have any one great virtue. More an assortment of fair to good ones, I guess. I'd say generosity and empathy are probably my strongest, although they break down plenty.

Answer the Sixth: I think you'd dig Pomosexuals, Gender Outlaw, and Skin: Talking About Sex, Class And Literature.

Answer the Seventh: See next post.

Answer the Eighth: I don't know whether to blame it on cluelessness, cultural rigidity (and all the accompanying issues of sexism/patriarchy/etc), or just plain bafflement. I often get the sense that Person thinks they've asked a yes or no question, and I've answered "blue" or something.
It rained all last night, and I'm ridiculously achy and foggy and grumpy today. The call volume is inexplicably ridiculously high, and I have patient-instructing tonight, so not even an early evening. Blarg. At the end of it all, though, there will hopefully be Thai food with [livejournal.com profile] futabachan, so that's a pleasant thought.

It's 11am, and the phones have finally stopped ringing for a moment. I haven't posted this yet, since it's so damn grumpy -- I was going to do a meme or something, for cheerful if mindless balance, but haven't run across one that grabbed my interest. Instead, how about a random question poll? (I promise not to take my grumpy out on your question)

[Poll #809433]
In other words.... Meme time!

I actually really like this one, although I'm sure I'll leave a bunch of stuff out, just because I manage to flake on remembering it. Hmmm... Only shows or series, not individuals; that's a touch trickier -- I wrote in Carol Queen, Susie Bright, and Eddie Izzard, and then took them back out again.

Step 1 - Post a list of up to 20 books/movies/anime/TV shows/video games/etc. that you've had an obsessive fannish love of at some time in your life.
Step 2 - Have your friends list guess your favourite character from each item.
Step 3 - Replicate in your own journal, should you be so inclined.

1. Farscape
2. Firefly
3. Angel/Buffy
4. Xena
5. Anne McCaffrey's Pern series (starting in 5th grade, I think)
6. X-files
7. Max Headroom
8. Penn and Teller's Bullshit
9. Star Trek (originally any and all, although I eventually faded out on Voyager and DS9, and never did watch the prequel one)
10. Sandman
11. Smallville
12. Alien Nation (TV show)
13. Addams Family (TV show)
14. Moomintroll books
15. Pippi Longstocking books
16. Naussica
17. Thundercats
18. The Muppets
19. Harry Potter
20. RHPS
21. The Dark Crystal (I was going to lump it in with "muppets", but I think it deserves its own listing)
22. Chronicles of Narnia
23. The Tick

Edit:
24. Brother Cadfael Chronicles (books, not the TV adaptations)
25. Wizard of Oz (books, not movie)
26. Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series

I think I have a lot of answers for this partially because I really specifically enjoy the experience of getting really immersed in a series, and always have. Generally, although I tend to continue to enjoy the shows/books/etc, there comes a point where the obsessiveness wears off. That time seems to be getting shorter as I get older. Not sure why that is, exactly, although I suspect it may be partly because there are so many more accessible options/distractions these days.

And when I get home, one good look over my bookshelf could probably at least double the length of this list.
Because I'm totally brain-dead today.

It's all relative:

1. How many siblings do you have?
Two; [livejournal.com profile] musicalchaos and [livejournal.com profile] jajy1979. Also, a sister-in-law, [livejournal.com profile] tasharowan. I'm the eldest; 4 1/2 years older than James (jajy1979), and 11 years older than Matt (musicalchaos).

2. Do you get along with your family?
I have almost no contact with my extended family, although I have rather vague but fond feelings for them. I get along very well with my sibs and parents, though.

3. Think you look like anyone in your family?
See what you think
Almost everyone who's seen us comments on how much Musicalchaos and I look alike. I somewhat resemble the rest of the family, but the resemblance between the two of us is so strong that when he was little, people constantly assumed he was my kid, even when my parents were standing right there (this embarrassed me horribly -- I looked old for 12 or 13, and the fact that people thought I had a kid meant they must think I'd had *shocked whisper*sex!!) I think Matt's had experiences in the past couple of years of people who knew me, but didn't know I had a brother in town, encountering him and asking him out of the blue if he was related to me.

4. Do you want / do you have any children of your own?
Don't have any, no. I've been waffling about whether I want any of my own for my entire adult life thus far. Still haven't made up my mind.

5. Special plans for Mother's Day?
I'm going to be in Chicago with some of my closest friends. Unfortunately, due to distance, most holidays are "call and say hi" affairs in my family.
1. What historical figure would you most like to meet?

Hmmm... Ben Franklin, Margaret Sanger, and Janis Joplin all come to mind.

2. What do you like most about where you live?

My personal connections to people in the area. Low cost of living, while being able to live pretty much downtown, and enjoy the benefits of city amenities. Lake Erie.

3. What do you like least about it?
The levels of pollution and unemployment, and the rather socially conservative nature of large chunks of the community. Being part of Ohio's political scene, with all its fuckeduppedness and scary fundamentalist influences.

4. We're together for several hours. What do we talk about?

I'd honestly be interested to hear you geek about meteorology for quite a while.

5. What is your all-time favorite film?

Wow, that's an incredibly difficult one, actually. I don't think I have a favorite movie, particularly. All of the following are movies that come to mind that I can watch over and over again, though.

Blues Brothers, Harold and Maude, Ghostbusters, Jeffrey, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Dark Crystal, Real Genius, The Thomas Crowne Affair, Saving Grace, Tank Girl, Time Bandits, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
You're hard, because you're pretty open :-)

1. If you could spend your time doing anything, without regard to money or location, what would you do and why?

Hmmm... Recreationally, or vocationally? I pretty much covered "dream job" here, so I'll take it to mean recreation. For me, that'd be a combination of visits to see people around the country and the world, and going to various festivals, events, conferences, and conventions.

2. What do you consider to be the major quality/feature you find yourself attracted to about another person?

I'm most attracted to how people's brains work, but integrity may well be the single biggest make-it-or-break-it issue.

3. Once you finish your degree, what kind of facility do you want to work in? What kind of work do you want to be doing?

Ideally, I want to be working someplace very like Preterm, the abortion clinic where I currently volunteer. They're feminist, non-profit, and generally just amazingly kickass. I definitely want to be working on some sort of clinic setting, working directly with patients. Depending on the state and the laws at the time, I might be directly providing abortion services, I might be assisting in some way. I'd also really like to be doing safer sex and sexual health education work, both one-on-one and for groups.

4. One is the lesson you've learned over your lifetime that you consider to be the most valuable to making you who you are now?

I can't fix everything, and sometimes I can cause more harm trying to. I've learned to step back a bit.

5. What... is your favorite color?

*chuckle* Brown, actually. Also fond of dark red and dark green.

Yeesh -- what is up with the phones today? It took me almost an hour to manage to finish this!

Since work's going a bit crazy this morning, I'm putting this up in lieu of anything with actual content (hopefully this afternoon will calm down some, and I can post some, and reply some).

How many times has someone on your friends list posted about something and you were really confused, but you didn't want to ask because you knew you SHOULD know? How many times have you felt 'guilty' asking a close LJ friend a question that should be 'obvious'?

Well, here's your chance.

If you've missed a few things, missed an entry and are confused, ask me any thing. Even something EXTREMELY basic. I'm not allowed to get even slightly irritated at any of the questions - we've all missed things before.

Anonymous questions are fine.
