Convictions on truly unjust laws (like obscenity laws) serve to highlight the larger injustice of the sex offender registry as a model. Such devices are part and parcel of bait and switch criminal justice wherein we trot out a few monstrous deeds as an excuse to create a branded criminal underclass for an overbvroad category of deeds that happens to encompass the original monsters. Since the category is overbroad it both allows for insane discretion on the part of DAs and judges and becomes useless at protecting people from that much narrower category of monsters.
