moominmuppetAnd I'm having a conversation with a coworker about it, I figured I'd copy that here to clarify what this piece is about for me.
Coworker (4:27:07 PM): yea so whats up with that...are we hoping for babies in the future
ccfSarah (4:27:38 PM): No, definitely not. It's about the shared humanity of creating art, and particularly creating the image of the female form over and over again in so many cultures
ccfSarah (4:29:34 PM): And how that gives me more of sense of connection with people whose lives I can barely imagine (many of my images are from the neolithic -- how much more foreign does it get) than names and dates ever could.
ccfSarah (4:30:27 PM): And it's also a big "fuck you" to the current beauty standard; I love the variety of shapes I find. And I love the mystery of what they mean, because "fertility figures" is only an easy short-hand; we honestly aren't sure about who created many of them, or why.
ccfSarah (4:30:40 PM): Might be self-documentation, might be religious, might be early porn. Impossible to say.
Coworker (4:37:58 PM): you know that is quite the whole fun/mystery of it, we look at fertility figures and see early religious/ mystical which means .....acceptability...but it could have been created out of someones "adult" indulgence...we will never know, and in turn makes it pretty damn cool

ccfSarah (4:39:13 PM): One of my favorite theories tries to explain the weird foreshortening of the early "venuses" by comparing them to the perspective a woman has looking down at her own body. That's the possible "self-documentation" option, and I love it. Might be early pregnancy diaries!
ccfSarah (4:40:14 PM): But in the larger scheme, me getting this tattoo is me placing myself within that 30,000 year tradition of desiring to create this kind of image.
Coworker (4:43:13 PM): have you just been drawn to the image of fertility....early on....so for you its the image its self.... not the actuall supposed mean of bringin luck in fertility that thesefigures are supposed to posses?

ccfSarah (4:43:35 PM): Although it also resonates with my passion about women's health care.
ccfSarah (4:44:54 PM): Actually, it makes a lot of sense if you see my apartment. It's almost entirely decorated in a huge array of female art nudes; it's one of my favorite artistic topics.
ccfSarah (4:45:15 PM): *chuckle* Maybe my tattoo is actually camoflage! I'll go home, and no one will be able to find me there!
