Psalms 40, 54. He put a new song in my mouth.
When we were visiting our daughter and her partner and their family, we
attended a Metropolitan Community Church, one of over a hundred scattered
across the country. Gays are welcomed, and the congregation was a lovely mix
of all sorts and conditions of men and women. The preacher for the day had
selected for his scripture some of Paul's writings about women obeying their
husbands, keeping silent in church, and so forth. A light ripple of laughter
ran through the listeners.
What in the world could the speaker do with these horrendous selections and
why had he chosen them?
I have never cared much for Paul, who comes across to me as heavy-handed and
judgmental. I would have relished some kind of put down, but his opening
words were "Paul changed." The speaker continued, and pointed out that this
same Paul later wrote that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave
nor free, male nor female. Paul changed not only on the road to Damascus,
but he continued to change.
Thanks be to God, my beliefs are not what they were 30 years ago, and what's
more, they are not what they were one year ago. The Spirit enables an
evolution in me that I hope will continue. For all I know, God may be
evolving.
1 Kings 18:20-40; Phil 3:1-16; Matt 3:1-12
Forward Day by Day.
I'm just feeling all gooey and grateful about the family I got.
