Clive Barker ought to be good, ditto Mercedes Lackey. Have read other things by them, but not these. Sarah Vowell looks to be great (and I lurved her as Violet in The Incredibles) as I hear it. Have also heard great things about Eats, Shoots and Leaves. I think Joan Vinge is wife to Verner Vinge, author of True Names and ther Dangers, which was awesome, IMO. Heard good things about her work as well.
