One film in particular has shaken up the Berlin International Film Festival taking place this week: “Frauenzimmer,” a documentary by 28-year-old filmmaker Saara Aila Waasner which follows three grandmother-aged women who work as prostitutes in Germany. Yes, prostitutes! Christel, 59, boasts of the demand for older women; Paula, 49, runs a bordello; and Karolina, 64, is a dominatrix who works in an S&M studio. Waasner said she wanted to show “the real people behind the job” and how some female sex workers find the job to be empowering, not exploitative. We just have one question: How soon until “Frauenzimmer” — or “Silver Girls” in English — opens in the U.S.?
Just over a week ago, a man named Chris Bartkowicz in Highlands Ranch, Colorado made a questionable (at best) PR move. He agreed to be interviewed by a local television station about his medical marijuana grow operation. Granted, he believed he was in compliance with state law and had no reason to fear prosecution. But, come on, dude. It’s one thing to make six figures growing marijuana in your home for patients; it’s quite another to advertise it on television. It’s like putting a “Home Invasions Encouraged” sign on your door.

Body-acceptance issues, and particularly prejudice against the overweight, is something I've become increasingly interested in since I've been writing this column. I've noticed that whenever I suggest treating fat people with courtesy, I get criticism for it--even hate mail. (The other two groups that this is true of are smokers and Muslims.) People really, truly believe that it is not only acceptable, but right to treat fat people with disdain. I'm sad to say that I've been inculcated with enough societal garbage that I occasionally hate my own body--but as a thin (white, able-bodied, etc.) person I cannot fathom what it must be like to have others take it upon themselves to hate my body for me. As I've said before, if you think fat people have no self-discipline, consider the fact that they haven't killed you yet. -- this blog also links to In the Fatosphere, Big Is In, or at Least Accepted

BTW there were lots of good articles and links there. I read quite a few. The Manga and Sexting ones are of particular interest, though the women's reproductive rights ones were good too.
