Comments in locked posts will share to FB if prompted, but because of the character limit, and because the link for the rest of the text is to a locked post, you can only see the beginning of anything lengthy and thoughtful enough to be worth sharing over (IMO). So I really hope LJ ditches that option suitably quickly. There's just too much room for accidental badness otherwise.

Posting comments over to FB means that each comment shows as its own post. That would get annoying damned fast, especially without the other peoples' comments and without the comment nesting. Better to leave that option off, and just let people read the comments at the source if they choose.

On the positive side, the new manner in which my main posts port over is definitely preferable to the old "Import Into Notes" thing. It's almost immediate, it shows as an actual status update (I think), and it links people back to the original post, rather than just the Notes version, so folks won't miss the comment discussions. Also, it appears that people can now comment on my LJ posts using their Facebook sign-in. Could someone who's on FB and not LJ try commenting on my previous "Linkety-Linkety (and first test of new FB/LJ link)" post to let me know if that works?

Not a status. An app-published link. ;) It won't replace your last status message, but it will publish to the feed.

Thanks, good to know. Frustrating, though. To my friends who only view the status message view, I generally seem totally absent over there. OK, maybe that's fair, since I generally am relatively absent.

That's not new; I've had it set up for more than a year now. It's never worked consistently though, so hopefully their changes will fix that issue.

Huh. I wasn't aware they had this LJ routing to FB option in LJ previously; I thought it was part of this new rollout. The old version I was talking about was the FB Import to Notes function, which is notoriously unreliable. We might be saying the same thing, but I can't tell.

Prior to this rollout there was two options (that I'm aware of, anyway):
[1] LJ -> FB Notes. This would take your LJ article and automatically create a FB Note. This appears to be what you are describing.
[2] LJ -> FB Wall Post. This would create a FB Wall Post on your profile saying "Jane Doe posted XYZ to LiveJournal"; it would look sort of like a FB Status update.

Setting up [1] was relatively trivial. [2] Was a pain in the butt, but once I got it working was my preference. It's been so long that I'm not even sure HOW I set up [2] anymore, so I hope it doesn't break :-)

Ah! I'd been looking for an option to do that, and never found it!

Well, I dug through all my FB tags, and found this link that seems to say how to set up [2]. Good luck! I should note that even when [2] was set up, I still usually had to have FB open in another tab of the browser to make it work, and even then there were occasionally issues.

Also, it appears that if you have a default setting of "friends" that you cant save and then change it. youhave to have a default of "everyone" it looks like.

That makes sense. Frankly, the less easy it is to accidentally crosspost, the better.

I'm so damned lucky that my parents and boss are basically unshockable, and I don't have anyone else in particular to worry about (my friends are either ok with me being me, or they're not)
