Happy National Coming Out Day! Y'all are clear that I'm bi, right? Seems rather hard to miss around here.

In an op-ed submission to the St Louis Post-Dispatch on Sunday, Isaac Katz, son of notoriously homophobic Washington University professor Jonathan Katz, came out of the closet as a proud gay man.

Guidance has been issued to officers warning that people who indulge in perverse outdoor sex acts such as ‘cottaging’ and ‘dogging’ must be protected.
The 60-page document claims that police should always investigate allegations of abuse made by people enjoying outdoor sex – despite the fact it is illegal.
Advice in the Hate Crime Enforcement Manual, published this week, claimed violent attacks on doggers often go unreported as victims are too embarrassed to come forward.

Connecting with female characters in geek television -- Excellent article that rings incredibly true for me. This is the single biggest reason I'm grateful for women's studies in college -- it's when I started noticing myself doing this kind of craptastic stuff, and started trying to root it out of my interactions with the world. I was so thoroughly guilty of all these patterns when I was a kid/teen, and I still have to consciously watch it.

Buying toys for my daughter, such as a bicycle, really drove home the pinkification issue, but also raised another. (This was in the late 80s/early 90s.)
The only 'girl's' bikes available were pink, had little baskets, etc, but most importantly, were loaded down with useless weight and cheap plastic bits that wouldn't last a week. Even the seats were cheap vinyl compared to boys bikes. Tires weren't good rubber, but were craptastic colored plastic. Just looking at the bikes you knew they'd last about a week before falling apart.

And there was no corresponding reduction in price. Marketers are shameless.

I would also like to say that 50-60 years isn't exactly 'a new development' IMO, although that is a subjective statement.

This is why I buy men's clothing whenever it's an option, too. Generally, it's better and more durably constructed.

And don't get me started on those cheap-ass pink toolkits at the hardware store...

Mom wrong: I have a friend who says that the only way to get motherhood right is to be a white, able-bodied middle-class straight woman in your late 20s, who is planning on having two kids some day but isn't ready yet. And even then, you can't stay too long in that golden state...

Pinkification: I generally love the idea of the campaign and the site, especially the basic concept that girls should have toys and play activities that aren't all about reinforcing the princess gender role. But I detect a whiff of internalized misogyny in some of their material. Even the name, "pink stinks"; yes, there are other gender roles than princess, but that doesn't mean that everything feminine is trivial and even despicable.

*nod* I think you definitely have a point on that.
