I was so thoroughly guilty of all these patterns when I was a kid/teen, and I still have to consciously watch it.

Date: 2010-10-12 12:33 pm (UTC)The only 'girl's' bikes available were pink, had little baskets, etc, but most importantly, were loaded down with useless weight and cheap plastic bits that wouldn't last a week. Even the seats were cheap vinyl compared to boys bikes. Tires weren't good rubber, but were craptastic colored plastic. Just looking at the bikes you knew they'd last about a week before falling apart.
And there was no corresponding reduction in price. Marketers are shameless.
I would also like to say that 50-60 years isn't exactly 'a new development' IMO, although that is a subjective statement.

Date: 2010-10-12 07:30 pm (UTC)Pinkification: I generally love the idea of the campaign and the site, especially the basic concept that girls should have toys and play activities that aren't all about reinforcing the princess gender role. But I detect a whiff of internalized misogyny in some of their material. Even the name, "pink stinks"; yes, there are other gender roles than princess, but that doesn't mean that everything feminine is trivial and even despicable.

*nod* I think you definitely have a point on that.
