In one of the online communities where I am at home, there's a custom of leaving a pebble on a blog post when one doesn't have a substantive response to offer but wants to show that one has been there, that one is listening and has heard something which hit home. It's kind of like the Jewish custom of leaving a pebble on a headstone, to show that one has passed through. It looks like this:

So, if I leave one of these on one of your posts, that's what it means. Feel free to do the same here.

*nod* I can understand that, although it's not true for me. For me, it helps to ameliorate the ways in which internet community is very different from in-person community, in that one doesn't know someone was listening until they say something.

Appreciate that point of view, but I disagree. It seems gentle, comforting, sweet to me. The connection to leaving a pebble on a gravestone touched me. There's no cyberful way to offer an eloquent silent witness, and sometimes that's what's truly called for.

Stone to stone, symbol to symbol, human to human, friend to friend.
