Called the 2nd Precinct to find out whether to come in to file a report there, or have someone come to the house. As expected, had to stand up for our right to have this reported, even though there isn't really anything they can do about it at the moment. Seem to have convinced the officer I spoke with (who even voluntarily used the phrase 'hate crime' so that's a good sign), but will have to go through it all over again when I get home. They don't recommend we come in, but that we call to have an officer come out. I've got the number for that, now, and anticipate the same kind of conversation all over again in order to get them to actually come out. And likely the same conversation a third time to get them to actually write a report and give us a copy. (sorry for the pre-emptive exasperation, but I've dealt with the local cops too many times on clinic protester violations).

I'm sorry. It sucks to have to deal with this shit and all the unknown crap that make something that can seem 'simple' a very scary and shitty thing to deal with on a minute to minute basis. I'm glad that you're going to file a report and that you can be with G for the interactions with the cops (and I hope you get a good one!).

Hoping this is an isolated incident and that you feel some community support as a result (and that you then get to go back to living life, unremarked-upon very soon)!

I am sorry this happened to you, but if it had to happen, I'm glad that you're in circumstances that let you push past the obstacles to get it reported. It is a shitty situation and the fact that they make it so hard to report just makes it worse.

And the cops ended up being pleasantly surprising, and handled everything appropriately and with a recognition of why it was a deal for us.

I am not surprised in the least, and yes, you will probably have to have the same conversation several more times. The Cleveland police never did overly impress me regarding their intelligence or their competence.

I guess that is one fortunate thing about Portland; most of the officers here seem far more enlightened and aware than in other places, though they are far from perfect.

I think they're making progress; I ended up being quite pleasantly surprised by the rest of our interactions, enough so that I ended up calling the community relations office this afternoon to commend them on it.
