Reading material
Sep. 18th, 2007 09:19 pmI just finished Naked on the Internet: Hookups, Downloads, and Cashing in on Internet Sexploration, by Audacia Ray (not particularly worksafe). I'd gotten a couple of chapters in a while back, but gotten distracted by something else, and just came back to it after finishing watching her new movie "The Bi Apple" (reviewed on my sexuality filter). The first few chapters felt like they were written for a different audience than me, and I wasn't sure whether I was going to end up getting all that interested in it or not, but it really got into a lot of interesting material after that, and the links listing in the back is itself alone a fabulous resource. All-in-all, an insightful and educational look at both the practicalities and the theory regarding the intersection of women's sexuality and the online world. I empathized a good deal with her ambivalence about much of the territory, especially around issues of commodification and empowerment, and I think that's a lot of what spoke to me most -- the internet has been deeply influential in the development and exploration of my sexuality in many of the ways she's writing about, and I've found myself struggling with many of the same questions. Anyway, I think this could turn into a massive post if I had more energy, but I don't, so I'll just say "highly recommended for anyone interested in the topic".
Cleveland Folks!
Sep. 18th, 2007 10:57 pmTwo things... First of all, fire pit at our place this Saturday night for
bec76's birthday. Comment for more info. Secondly, two local places with job openings. Visible Voice, our awesome local bookstore, is looking for someone very part-time and flexible to pick up some time when the two current employees can't be there. Also, House of Blues, where Becca works, is short some box office staff, and applications would be welcome (Bec would certainly be happy to see those positions filled again).
*sigh* What happened to "I was too exhausted to function and was going to come home and go right to sleep"?
Also, I really wanted to like The Oh! in Ohio", but it just never quite came together for me. Too many leaps that made no sense (not ok trying a vibrator, but going to show up at a "view your vulva" workshop? Seriously?), and I just didn't find any of the characters particularly sympathetic or interesting. Only vageuly entertaining for me because it's fun to see Cleveland in a movie, and because I'm generally interested in how sexuality topics are handled in movies, but it's not even like either of those were particularly amazing in this one -- the references to and shots of Cleveland felt forced, and the take on sexuality mostly just annoyed me. So, blah. Not particularly recommended.
(on a TV note, though, Californication, Burn Notice, Psych, and Torchwood are all fabulous, and we just found out that the upcoming show Reaper is a Kevin Smith deal, so we're suddenly excited about that)
