Looking at Monster.com right now. Looks like there's a decent number of postings for helpdesks of various sorts in the Albany area. Encouraging. Good. Hopefully that'll continue to be the case. I'll need to do some brushing up on some of my skills before I move, though. I've been dealing primarily with specialized hospital apps for the last three years.

I'm tempted to go look at possible networking and cabling jobs, but I know that's really not a great idea. The fibro may be more under control than it was when I last did that kind of work, but I don't particularly want to tempt fate right now. Still... tempting. Less office-drag, more work-boots and ladders and fun toys.

Ew. I just realized that if I end up in another office, I'm going to have to get used to doing office-drag all over again. Folks here have gotten used to my complete and utter disregard for the dress code (and I'm in an area where it doesn't really matter). Erg. I'm really not looking forward to having to re-earn the right to be my generally freakish self all over again. Here, the odds of me getting in serious trouble for much of anything I do are pretty slim, since I've got excellent call stats, the users say nice things about me, and I've been doing my job well for the past three years. I'm going to have to be new somewhere again. I hate that.

Stuck in my head at the moment:

Tech-N9ne, Slacker

Imma slacker, never did I have a lot of dough
Imma slacker, smoking pot and watchin' videos
Imma slacker, go whichever way the wind blows
Those just tuning in I'm just letting' ya know
That Imma slacker, every time I take a look around
Imma slacker, stuck upon my face is a frown
I don't do enough, I just fool around
Ya'll can go to hell, how does that sound

Not every help desk requires office drag; do some of these jobs come from places that don't?

Quite possibly, but honestly the deciding factors in which job I end up taking (assuming I have multiple choices) are probably going to rely on practicalities like benefits and pay. It'll only be for a year or two, most likely, before we move elsewhere or I start school, and I need to make what I can during that time.

Unless the pay difference is astounding, it's totally worth it to find an office whose "corporate culture" you are suited to.

Part of it, for me, is that Austin is so much more laid back in general than Chicago but ABN was hardcore corporate megacorp bullshit and the pleasure of having a decent work environment and non-paranoid co-workers now, is totally worth the gigantic cut in pay.

Of course I just got lucky. I was so broke that I would've worked at a kitten smashing factory just to get some green when I slipped in here.

Oh, it's a factor, and if the difference in pay isn't much, I'll go with the more comfortable environment. However, one of my goals when I first move is to bring in cash for the household, so that's a priority.

Can you just assume from now on, that whenever I might say something along the lines of, "well.... okay. But make sure you look out for yourself as well as (who or whatever you're being helpful to)" That I am actually saying it?

I don't know why you bring out the mother hen in me. Probably it has to do with distance. I'm sure not that over-protective with most people. heh.

and don't track mud over the carpet! You aren't going out like that are you? You'll catch cold! Eat eat, look at you you're like a scarecrow!

okay, I'll stop.

*chuckle* You have less to worry about in that regard with me being part of that household than under just about any other circumstances. [livejournal.com profile] forestfire is quite adept at mother henning me when it's needed. They take ridiculously good care of me. That's part of the rather synergistic effect of me moving there; our strengths compliment each other quite well.

How'd 'cha like a new silly bumper sticker? "I have a liking for a Viking".

I can also try to find some of the refridgerator magnets. They're even more amusing. "UFF-DA!" I thought James had coined that one.. *chuckle* oh well.

Nope. Sorry. Just heard it from my brother when we were initially joking about the three of us appearing to be the beginnings of a viking horde.

Hmmm, interesting. Amusing though given my penchant for using oy vey. Oh, and in another amusing little coincedence, I'm from MI too.

Actually, I'm a guy. *chuckle* So, I suppose the answer would be no. Most of the people I use it around are close female friends, and know I'm usually either joking or particularly annoyed when I start using it at random intervals.

Yup. That's the issue for me. I can be all fine and dandy doing cabling work for quite a while, then have a flare, and I'm suddenly too fuckered up to even use a screwdriver for a week.
