I've often pondered why I watch the Olympics pretty religiously, but don't watch any other sports at all. I think it's about attention span. Within the Olympics, I don't tend to watch any of the team games (hockey, basketball, etc) that take a great deal of time, either. Apparently I only like my sports in 30-second to 7-minute intervals, and I tend to prefer the shorter end of that spectrum. Also, only having to pay attention every few years in nice.

The opening ceremonies were quite pretty, with a few exceptions and WTF-moments. What was up with the poodle-skirts gone horribly, horribly awry on the sign carriers during the parade of nations? Did anyone else see the closeups of the actual little 3D skiers on their mountain-skirts? Also, why the out-of-date gay club mix? Admittedly, I found "YMCA" and "I Will Survive" to be amusing accompaniment to the parade, but it did seem rather out of left field, there. As did the pit-stop and the ferrari doing donuts in the middle of the arena. And the "tribute to 80s computer animation" that was the badly misguided "giant skier made of people". They did pretty well with the rest of that series, but that bit just made me crave an atari joystick.

What is wrong with craving an atari joystick? *hrmph*

*chuckle* Not a thing, if pixelated graphics were their goal there. Seemed a bit out of left field thematically, though, so I can only assume they intended it to appear a bit more... naturalistic. (I really wish I could find a screen-cap -- it was bizarre)

I love the olympics. always have. I like other sports too.. maybe for you it's attention span, for me it's that it's the end all be all...and it's only every 4 years, and these are people who dedicate their lives to something far more exclusively than i ever have to anything. while i'm glad i'm so well rounded, i do admire them. i always tear up at national anthems, too. between that and the color purple being on yesterday, my beau and i were both sobbing!

as for the big flukes...i think they've done a couple wierd things that just don't look organized. I can't imagine they had "gay club disco mix" planned way ahead of time. (and by the ways, those are the exact word that i said to the television when YMCA came on)...wavelenght... That just screamed last-minute. but it's a huge production, i must admit. it's gotta be rough.
