Belated weekend update -- trip to PA

My trip out had a bit more Greyhound Drama than usual; when we pulled up to the station there were multiple cop cars and an ambulance, lights flashing, and then there was a woman having a screaming conniption fit in the next row over for at least an hour straight (she was still yelling by the time our bus pulled away; that's some phenomenal staying power). Disturbingly, she was traveling with a two or three year old child, who mostly just wandered the station while she was going apeshit. When it's the random strangers at a Greyhound station who are watching out for your child's safety (shooing her back to her mom and such), odds are you're screwing some part of this "parenting" thing up pretty badly. Then our driver got lost trying to find the new Pittsburgh bus station, which engendered some sort of confrontation between him and a pissed off passenger. I have vague recollections (I was mostly asleep) of lots of yelling, and multiple threats to call the cops. Dude got to the station and tried to challenge one of the baggage handlers to a fight. It was ridiculous (also irritating, since he was at the time in the middle of the walkway between me and my bus).
Anyway, it kept the trip from being boring, and even with the various delay I was only about 1/2 hour late arriving in Philly, where
firinel,
marnanel,
riordon, and
saramae were waiting to pick me up. We headed back to Pottstown, took a nap for a bit, and then went out for lunch at a remarkably tasty little pizza place. Unfortunately, the unending headache of Doom still hadn't gone away (it ended up waxing and waning all the way through Monday), so we napped for a while longer after lunch, then went to the local fair for the evening, and wandered while
riordon accumulated a collection of brightly colored plush prizes.
Saturday we slept in a bit.
floatyfish and
onib arrived to take us to the Gunnison nude beach in Jersey. On the way we got tasty diner food for lunch, and then spent the several hour drive chatting; I'm not sure if it's true for Onib, who did all the driving, but it seemed to me that the time passed remarkably quickly. This was the first time I'd been to an officially nude beach; it was nice not to be looking over my shoulder all the time. We wandered up and down the beach; didn't actually go swimming as such, just walked in the water and found nifty shells. The view was remarkably clear, and we could see NYC on the horizon, which was quite a surprise to me (hadn't realized we were anywhere near that close -- my mental map of the northeast is perpetually skewed by my midwestern standards on state size). The weather wasn't too hot or too overwhelmingly sunny, so with the help of a good layer of sunscreen I didn't even burn.
floatyfish had packed a wonderful picnic, and after enjoying that we wound our way back up to the car to head home (which was quite a reminder that they just aren't kidding at all when they say walking on sand is good exercise -- yeesh!). We got back to Pottstown just in time to meet
riordon,
saramae and Sharon at the fireworks, and to get funnel cakes and cotton candy at the fair. Even though it was much to late for reasonable people who must be up at 6am to stay up for a movie, I also introduced
firinel to Tank Girl, which is a favorite movie of mine. Sunday was all travel back home, with much less Greyhound Drama, but a decent amount of sleep and reading in exchange.
Pictures to come, once I get them uploaded.

Date: 2006-07-16 06:27 pm (UTC)Yeah, that took me some getting used to when I moved to the Philly area too. Its kind of weird being able to take a drive through several states in the time it'd take you to drive across Ohio. Of course driving across Ohio (did it a couple times between Cleveland and Cincy) is not my idea of fun as the damn state seems to go on forever. That's something I like about NC--as big as it is, there is a huge amount of geographical diversity.
