I know some of our vilest and nastiest antis are down in Mississippi for this, and it's been on my mind along with some more personal stuff that's bringing me down. I'm supposed to be at the Center tomorrow, escorting. I'm sort of looking forward to it, because it's something to do in response -- whether I'm in Mississippi or Ohio, it's all part of the same thing. I suspect tomorrow's going to be a harder day than usual in terms of biting my tongue, though. When I'm already angry/upset/emotional, whatever the reasons, it gets a lot more tempting to tell them exactly what I think of them.

They burned a gay pride flag and a copy of the Quaran?!

Oh, I forgot, inciting religious hatred isn't a crime here, is it?

Nope. I have mixed feelings about that, given how strongly I feel about freedom of (offensive) expression.

It's quite strange how something can shift from "that is regrettable behaviour, but if they want to do it I shouldn't stop them" to "OMG that is so illegal, what did they think they were doing?" just by crossing the ocean. (In the opposite direction, I've heard Americans react that way to, say, the idea of the marriage of first cousins.)

It's legal at least under English and Scots law. There is no additional genetic test. This made me a little surprised when I came to the US and heard people talking about it in the same tone one might use to talk about a marriage to a sibling.

I guess Katrina wasn't enough for them. I'd steer clear of Mississippi on Labor Day Weekend.

That was one of the almost funny things about the psychofundie response to Katrina. They went on, at one point, about how it was God's punishment for abortions and such. And most of us were thinking... Why's he slamming the state with the fewest clinics, then? Wouldn't the logical conclusion be that God hates states that don't provide access?

Or is he just mean enough to be willing to destroy Mississippi on his way past Louisiana?

I bet these were the same psychofundies who were blasting the "other" religion for saying that the tsunami in Dec 2004 was due to bad karma.
