After being suitably surprised by [livejournal.com profile] marnanel telling me today that a favorite children's author of mine, E. Nesbit, was in an open marriage and a political activist, I was poking around on Wikipedia to see what other sorts of things there were to learn about random authors from my childhood. My mind immediately went to Frances Hodgson Burnett, and I was quite stunned by something in that article that I'd never known. I had no idea that A Little Princess was actually a revised and expanded edition of Sara Crewe -- I just assumed they were alternate titles. The only copy I've ever read is the old family copy of Sara Crewe, and now I really wonder how much of my disgust with the movie versions of A Little Princess were due to the inevitable failures of translating book to film, and how much might've been that "I don't remember that part, and that other part is just wrong!" was a reflection of the changes between Sara Crewe and A Little Princess in their book forms. Hmmm.

As I recall, Sara Crewe is really more of a short story than a novel. A Little Princess expands the characters a lot and adds many scenes to the story. I loved A Little Princess much more than the earlier work.
