Pants!

May. 30th, 2008 07:11 am
I found my pants!

No, really, this has been driving me crazy for days. I hate it when the house eats things, and it managed to eat my brand-new jeans that I really love sometime last week.

Finally tore apart the entire room, found them all the way under the couch. *eyeroll*

I woke up at 4am or so, and I've got basically everything set to go, just need to grab a shower and actually pack my clothes into the bag.

One of the really nice things about the household is the pet care situation. Although I really do hate leaving them behind, it's nice that we've got a pretty established routine, and it's surpassingly rare that all five of us are out of town at once. So there's no "hurried emergency lists for new petsitter" to deal with or anything. For someone with nine animals, that's a huge boon.

I'm finding So You Think You Can Dance disturbingly entrancing.

And it's been a while since I've gone on even a short road-trip that didn't involve public transit of some sort; I'm looking forward to the drive.

Also, I have not forgotten the state of fourth floor Old Kenyon in the summer. We're bringing extra fans.
Can't accidentally procrastinate out of it now.

Wiscon 33 tickets memberships have been purchased!

Tonight's been a hectic but excellent evening. Coming home from work I unexpectedly found myself on the train with Casey, who's likely moving to the neighborhood, and I've discovered another awesome friend of hers is already moved in here. So she ended up coming over for a bit, and he came by, and Paul stopped by, and I needed to print stuff out, so all setup on the printer (including finding a flat space to fit it) had to happen all at once. And Erin's come over to hang out tonight, as had Grafton's friend Kaitlyn, and the four of us hit Prosperity for $10 steak night. Yum. Full now. Much laughter and red meat.

And I just found out via Facebook that two of the old friends I found there are going to be in town for reunion, which was excellent bonus news!

I'm too sleepy and drained to actually do any packing tonight, so I'm making lists instead, as a way of assuaging my OCD side.
Yesterday was about as craptastic as a day that involved getting to see Eddie Izzard could be. Shocking and enraging and worrying Very Bad News for a good friend first thing in the morning, death of an author (something that always hits me hard), really stressful and busy day at work, and flaring and migraine by the time I got home. I medicated enough to be able to go to the show, but I couldn't help dozing through part of it, which was frustrating. Still, it was a lot of fun. And some enjoyable conversations in the evening (*waves* to [livejournal.com profile] rysmiel and [livejournal.com profile] jokervalentine), as well as hearing back from an old friend I'd found the other day, did provide enough bright spots that by the end of the day I wasn't actually in a bad mood, just utterly, utterly drained.

Today is all about relaxation, recuperation, and some moderate amount of house organization (which I find soothing). Oh, and finally catching up on the Netflix. I'm watching Origin: Spirits of the Past, which has a very Miyazaki feel to it so far, and I've also got Bam Bam and Celeste (Margaret Cho!), and The Devil's Rain (70s Shatner horror! Hee!). And then Grafton and I have project plans for the afternoon that should be lots of fun. So although Friend is still very much on my mind, the general exhaustion and other crap stress is basically gone now, and I'm feeling relatively placid and relaxed.

Today shall be a day without crises, Very Bad News, or drama. I so declare it.

Any local folks who want to come over and partake of the chillness are most welcome.

Reunion!

May. 22nd, 2008 08:27 am
So, the Peep reunion is next weekend! *bouncebouncebounce*

[livejournal.com profile] bec76 has gone with me in the past, and had a lot of fun, but can't make it this year. [livejournal.com profile] grf can, though, and we decided this morning that he's going down with me! Yay! I love getting to introduce the people I care about to the other people I care about, and a place that's more iconic of "home" than any other in my history. (Huh, I should google Peeps O Kenyon more often; I just found blogs and myspace pages for a number of friends...)

Also, today this isn't just my default icon; the pic is of one of the murals in the Peep lounge.

Peeps on my friends list... Who else is going to be there? I know I don't get my [livejournal.com profile] napalmmk9 this year, which is a bummer, but I'm not sure about the rest of you.
My sleep patterns recently have been even screwier than usual, and I think I've been averaging not much more than four or five hours a day most of the week (for the past several weeks, at least, actually). Really not ideal. Manic or not, this Does Not Work. Aside from just generally being totally exhausted (although frustratingly not sleepy whenever sleep is a reasonable option -- thanks, mania), it's a good way to trigger a nasty fibro flare. And manic and flaring is just a lousy, infuriating combination; a brain that won't stop, and a body that won't go.

The rest of the week isn't going to slow down at all, either. Tonight I'm patient-instructing again, and then will finally get some time to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] curiousredhead for the first time in entirely too long, tomorrow I have to be at work by 7am (I'm hoping I can beg Mark into driving me in, rather than having to catch a 5:30am bus), then I leave work mid-afternoon to go get my root canal finished. I'll probably have Paul over to work on the house some more in the evening, and may get a chance to hang out with Erin for a while, too, although that's uncertain at the moment. Friday I should get to work early, although I have doubts about that actually happening, and then we're going to the Eddie Izzard show in the evening.

Thankfully, I'm not escorting at the clinic on Saturday morning, but I do need to hash out next month's schedule. We're losing all our students for the summer, so it won't be fun. Most of Saturday is actually looking like decent recuperation and life-catchup time, thankfully, although Erin's performing in Akron that night, and I may try to make it down to the show. Sunday, [livejournal.com profile] jokervalentine is coming in to town.

Really need to start behaving myself about bedtimes. Good IM conversations and getting to hang out with housemates 'til too late are fun, but not functional.
I'm really lucky I was only 10 minutes late to work this morning; I woke up at 7:11am, and normally need to have the pets taken care of and be dressed and out the door by 7:13. Thank maude Mark's a morning person; he gave me a ride to the Rapid Station.

I just finished up Bi America, which I wrote about a few posts back. I continued to be deeply impressed with it all through, and I think he has a lot of insightful things to say about the evolution of bi community. Really highly recommended for any bi organizers or activists, and generally recommended for folks with an interest in the history and evolution of the US bi community.

Patient-instructing for the first time in ages tonight; always a bit awkward to get back in the swing of things, but it'll be nice to get back into it, all the same.

Eddie Izzard this Friday! Woot! Not sure about the rest of the weekend; a bunch of different plans in various amorphous points right now. Hopefully that'll get sorted out well, and I'll get to see everyone I'd like to see.
He's so logical. So sensible. He tracks his gas mileage obsessively. He knows his finances to the penny.

And then there are the decisions that he gets utterly set on, and I can't make the least sense out of. Like yesterday, when I had to debate with him for 50 blocks about why taking Euclid, to get from E. 172 to W. 11th, was NOT a more reasonable choice than taking I-90 (locals will understand why this is so damned baffling, we're talking a total drive time difference of probably close to an hour). And today, when the plan is apparently to come up from their hotel room in Akron (my brother's at Kent), pick me up from work in East Cleveland, and then drive back down to Akron, in rush hour, because "there are all sorts of restaurants and a movie theatre right across from our hotel". Keep in mind, I need to be back in Cleveland, at home, no later than 10pm or so if I'm going to have a hope in hell of being functional tomorrow. Keep in mind that Cleveland has no shortage of movie theatres. No shortage of restaurants. No shortage of these things paired together. WTF, Dad, WTF? Really, if you're set on chain restaurants (my folks seem to have a thing for them), I can and will find them for you up here. I just don't understand why I'm going to spend an extra two hours, minimum, in the car, when we've only got about five to spend together today, in order to get to something that's perfectly available here.

Edit: Finally convinced him that Valley View, and the innumerable restaurants around it, was a better option than driving to Akron just because he already knew where they were down there. Hoorah!
Wish I could go to this, but since I can't, I figure I'll pass the word (and now I'm off to patient-instructing!):

If you are in New York this Friday, please come out! Please pass it on
to folks who might be interested.

Assorted interesting (to me, at least) things I figure might interest others:

Sex Workers' Art Show )

From a mailing list:
The Style section of yesterday's Washington Post features an article on
polyamory.

the documentary Bi the Way is finally complete and going to be shown (see also their blog)

BECAUSE 2008 is coming -- time to register! (this is the Midwest's Bi conference, and I'm thrilled to see if back after a several year hiatus. Anyone else reading this planning on going?)

Tilda Swinton's poly, and dealing with it with exquisite class, as always (like I didn't already have a huge enough crush on her)

Sex Work Conference coming up in Chicago )

Bi Request short film program at San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival )

(which, incidentally, reminds me that The Cleveland International Film Festival is coming up soon!)

And I think that's it for the moment. That turned out to be a lot more than I expected.
I've been wanting to see Avenue Q for ages (pretty much from the first minute I heard about it), and it's finally in town. I will be deeply displeased if I end up being so much of a flake that I can't manage to schedule and budget for it.

Right now I'm waiting for it to be 12:30 so I can do the online check-in for my flight tomorrow. Work's busy and I'm tired, and I'm worried I'm going to forget, and make my life more of a hassle tomorrow. Blah.

Otherwise, life continues apace. I'm off to TN this weekend to see Mom, and will return Monday night. I'll be even more behind on LJ by then, but I'm rather pleased that in the past week I've finally managed to at least get caught up on email (as well as several work projects I wanted to pursue). During the weekend, if you receive unexpectedly terse emails from me with stupid capitalization, it's because I'm sending from my cell phone, which seems to insist on capitalizing the first letter of every word, and I haven't bothered figuring out how to stop that.

As usual, life busy, life good, more later.

Very, very briefly (without even links -- sorry about that), Thank You for Smoking is fabulous and hysterical. I Am America (and so can you) is my current book; it's a refreshing break after finishing the catalog of thirty years of clinic violence, Targets of Hatred (which was fascinating, and I highly recommend, but is also infuriating and depressing).
I'm interested, but dubious about my schedule. However, I figured I'd post this in case anyone else wants to check it out.

NO END IN SIGHT
A chronological look at the fiasco in Iraq, especially
decisions made in the spring of 2003 - and the backgrounds
of those making decisions - immediately following the
overthrow of Saddam: no occupation plan, an inadequate team
to run the country, insufficient troops to keep order, and
three edicts from the White House announced by Bremmer when
he took over: no provisional Iraqi government,
de-Ba'athification, and disbanding the Iraqi armed services.
The film has chapters (from History to Consequences), and
the talking heads are reporters, academics, soldiers,
military brass, and former Bush-administration officials,
including several who were in Baghdad in 2003.

First of all, a belated Happy Birthday to the marvelous [livejournal.com profile] firinel!

The weekend was quite social, rather unexpectedly. Grafton was in town, and he and Bec and I got a good deal of time to hang out. I also went to the Muppet event at CMA with [livejournal.com profile] may_dryad and [livejournal.com profile] ethan_greer, followed by lunch at Tommy's and some browsing at Mac's Backs. Wonderful company, lots of fun, good day. There are more Muppet events happening there -- get your tickets in advance, because at least for ours, it was selling out as we arrived, and if we hadn't prepurchased, we wouldn't have been able to get in. Although much of what they're showing can also be found elsewhere (our presentation was about 1/3 Muppet episode, 1/3 rare clips, and 1/3 Storyteller episode), I'd still definitely recommend it for Muppets fans. [livejournal.com profile] may_dryad found some great clips of some of the segments we saw.

Sunday [livejournal.com profile] curiousredhead and I finally managed to get our schedules in sync to fit in some quality hang-out time, and had a lovely afternoon. Today I'm working the late shift for the last day, which meant I got the morning to hang out with Bec and Grafton before Grafton heads back to Michigan today.

This week life is slowly going back to its normal schedule, and this weekend I'm flying out to meet up with my Mom in Nashville for a few days.

In movies this past week (at least what comes to mind to mention):
The Love-Ins: Holy crap. It's Reefer Madness for acidheads. Cleanest hippies ever. A guru who refers to his own organization as "a cult" on a regular basis. Totally predictable crises as Good Kids Go Bad. It was made in '67, so it's especially fun to see a contemporaneous reaction to things, in moralistic lesson form. I don't know if it's available on DVD; Netflix doesn't seem to have it. If you run across it, though, it's amusing in its own twisted and horrifying way.

Keeping Mum: Loved it, loved it. Maggie Smith as a psychotic Mary Poppins. It's a bit slow to get moving because she doesn't show up for a bit, but once she appears it's fabulous. And besides, I have a soft spot for stories about clergy families. I agree with Bec that Swayze was painfully skeezy in a rather grating way, though.

Grandma's Boy: A silly stoner flick, but a surprisingly amusing one. Some of the minor characters were irritating, but I was so fond of Doris Roberts, Linda Cardellini and Allen Covert that I barely noticed.

Music and Lyrics: I always remember disliking Hugh Grant much more than I actually do; it's weird. I'm not generally big on romantic comedies, but once in a while they're fun, and this was an enjoyable one. Total fluff, but if you're looking for fluff, decent stuff.

Touch the Sound: An interesting if slow-moving documentary about percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Reminiscent of Rivers and Tides in overall tone, really.

Trudell: Just generally interesting; I didn't know much about him before this, and was only moderately familiar with AIM's history.

Kindergarten for adults -- what a cool idea.

An interesting little article from Susie Bright about her take on abortion in movies recently -- I'm basically in agreement with her about why I find the approach uncomfortable, even though I recognize the requirements of plot that make other approaches less likely.
I attended twice, and had a fabulous time; I'm definitely planning on making it this year if life cooperates even a little bit. Anyone else interested or planning to attend? It'd be a nice chance to attach faces to names here and there.

Muppets!

Jan. 4th, 2008 03:02 pm
Just thought Clevelanders would like to know about this (Muppet events at the CMA this Friday/Sat/Sunday).

Got to see [livejournal.com profile] fabulousmisst today, which was indeed fabulous.

Back to the phones.
Went to see Michelle Shocked with [livejournal.com profile] jen_tel last night. Things are still really busy at work, so I can't go on about it as much as I'd like, but it was a wonderful time, and also quite a nostalgia trip for me (I've seen her live once before about 12 or 15 years ago with Chad in Columbus, and her music is something of a soundtrack of certain periods of my life). More later maybe, but, in brief, Yay!
No voice, no Helpdesk Agent. So I'm home sick today. Given how little voice I had yesterday, I'd been expecting it, so I'd been able to arrange shift coverage, and am not screwing anyone over. Also, Fridays are generally our quietest days. So, I'm home, Becca's home, we're hanging out with the pets, having yummy Prosperity Club bread pudding that I declared my birthday cake, and watching movies and such. I'm snotty and icky, but also perfectly cheery, so it's all good.

I did get a lovely early-birthday dinner with [livejournal.com profile] jen_tel last night at Prosperity, my favorite local restaurant/bar. Steak is good for colds *nodnod*. I also got a gorgeous book from [livejournal.com profile] calebbullen, Evolution, and a great stuffed Rygel from Becca. Thanks for all the birthday wishes and such; I probably won't be online most of the rest of the day; we still haven't gotten the router working, so only Bec's PC is online at the moment.
I was feeling like utter crap all day, but a nice long post-escorting nap really helped, and I was finally feeling pretty decent when time rolled around for the C-Space benefit. [livejournal.com profile] bec76, [livejournal.com profile] zodarzone, my friend Casey and her friend Joanna all headed over around 7pm. It was a fabulous time, and we also ran into Bec's sister and brother, [livejournal.com profile] limbicquestion, [livejournal.com profile] infowidget, and a whole assortment of other folks I know through various venues. We got there in time for the Dodgeball game, and spent a while cheering on Casey and Joanna in that (Bec has pictures), then headed inside to check out the Tesla coil demo, then off to Sex Ed (everything was based around a classroom theme) for a discussion of sex toys, with a focus on material safety. The woman running the session also providing a link I find especially handy: BadVibes.Org, site of the Coalition Against Toxic Toys -- lots of very useful information, all in one place. The topic of toy material safety has been gaining interest in recent years, and I'm very glad to see it; the standards for safety, for products that are going to be in extended contact with mucous membranes, are appalling low (ok, non-existent), and many toys are not actually labelled as to material at all. Anyway, that whole session was a lot of fun, and given the current toy design project [livejournal.com profile] grf and I are working on, getting the info about CATT was worth attending all on its own. We were already talking about these issues, so this was quite apropos. Anyway, back to the event -- having it in the museum was brilliant and fun -- the best other event was the planetarium show, which was so packed there were people on the floor. The guy running the show seemed to be having fun with his extremely excited and somewhat tipsy audience, and I'm very glad we didn't miss the last show. I also spent a lot of time just wandering the museum itself, and checking out the displays. I don't think I've been in Cleveland's Natural History Museum before, and it was nice to be reminded it was there. I hope their willingness to accomodate this event pays off in that regard -- reminding us it's there, and getting our real business more often in the future.

And a couple of other things: Doctor Who Crafts, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jajy1979.

And another C-Space-affiliated event:
In accordance with the September full moon appearance we'll be walking the labyrinth located in Crown Point Farm in Bath, Ohio on Wednesday, September 26. http://www.crownpt.org/

Labyrinth walking is a practice used to center oneself, work on self alignment, and clear the mind. Labyrinths can represent life's journeys or pilgrimages. The walking and balancing that occurs can quiet the body, mind, and spirit and produce a receptive state for meditation and contemplation!

We will meet at C-Space (4323 Clark Ave. in Cleveland) at 815pm and leave by 830pm to go to Crown Point. That means we'll get there a little after 9pm. I heard back from Sister Mary Ellen (who was delighted with to hear about our use of the space for such an occasion), and she said that she'll let people know of our plans.

Hope to see you there!

(I'm not actually sure how they want RSVPs on this, but I'd suggest either contacting C-Space, or drop a comment here, and I'll get you the email address of the friend who contacted me about it. I won't be able to go, since I'll be in LA, but I thought other folks might be interested.

Today is going to be all about recuperation, and maybe a bit of housecleaning. I should also set aside some time to spend in my room, since I have J's three cats in there until Monday, and they could use a bit more affection than they're currently getting just through my intermittent trips in there.
My Calendar has totally failed me. So I thought I couldn't go to this event, because I'd somehow got it into my head that it was Friday, and that's [livejournal.com profile] grf's last day in town. And then I talked to [livejournal.com profile] jen_tel last night, and now I've got plans to go see Dar Williams with her at Oberlin on Saturday night. And then I just realized, as I was going through my email, that this event is happening Saturday, not Friday. Argh, Argh, Argh!!

(and [livejournal.com profile] jen_tel rocks, and is letting my spacey self off the hook, so I'm definitely going!)

"Field Trip"
Saturday, September 8, 6pm to midnight
Cleveland Museum of Natural History

RSVP required to ian.charnas@gmail.com

Let's get right to the point. You are hereby invited to what some
will call the greatest party/fundraiser of their lives. Sounds like a
lot of hot air and braggadocio, doesn't it? Well lend me your ear for
just a moment...

The theme for the party is "Junior High", which means we're starting
at 6pm with "recess" (dodgeball, kickball, four-squares) on the lawn
just outside the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, which we will
TOTALLY OWN for the night of Saturday September 8th. At the same time
"music class" and "science class" will be outside, represented by an
enormously wet and playable water-organ (so big we have to hook it up
to a fire-hydrant), and a giant tesla coil for when it gets a little
darker. After a school meal (sloppy tacos) we'll be taking a field
trip inside the museum, where "students" can use their time to take a
Sex-Ed class (taught by the young firebrand woman that's teaching
progressive sex-ed to cleveland's youth), test out a real-life Hickey
Machine, get checked at the Lice-Check station, play some Pinball, try
to get their friend's older sister to buy them something at the cash
bar, pet the opossum and other live animals, check out the custom
amped-up version of the plantetarium show, attend Gym Class with
Cleveland's "Double Dutch Will Take You Higher" performance jump-rope
team, take in a "Drama Club" performance by Columbus performance
artists Queen Mae and the Bells, and party through a Homecoming dance
with Afro-Electronique music by Mifune echoing off the dinosaurs in
the Kirtland Hall of Prehistoric Life... and that's not to mention a
few surprises we've got planned. The museum is ours, and we intend to
rock out.

The purpose of the party is that it's a fundraiser for the C-Space
community center (clevelandspace.org). They need money for rent on
the building and insurance for the children or adults using the
center. Nobody gets paid to work there, it's all 100% volunteer.

So, we're taking $5 - $10 suggested donations at the door ($2 for
kids), then there will be donations at the Hickey Machine and for the
food, and of course the cash bar proceeds will go towards the
community center as well. All of the performance artists and
bartenders and hall monitors and chefs and cleanup crews and
industrial designers and scientists are donating their time in order
to make this dream happen. All you need to do is attend and have the
time of your lives! Free parking available in the museum lot, on wade
oval, and overflow parking at the VA hospital lot 1 block away. Easy
to get to from the E. 120th stop on the red-line rapid, or any bus
that goes to university circle. Just behind the art museum.

With the help of some friends, we printed, signed, and delivered 1000
invitations. We're all out! If you would like to come and you
haven't received an invitation, please send an email with your full
name to ian.charnas@gmail.com saying you'd like to be on the list, and
your name will be put on the list at the ticket table. Don't forget
this important step!
